In walking distance from The Queen of Calitzdorp we have three wineries all with restaurants attached.
Boplaas’ distilling heritage dates back to 1880; when current owner, Carel Nel’s great-great grandfather exported his first consignment of fine Boplaas Brandy to England. Boplaas also became the first cellar to release an Estate Brandy.
Calitzdorp Wine Cellar was established in 1928 and produced wine for Distell until the late eighties. During the eighties, Sweet Muscadel and Hanepoot were flagship wines and are still amongst our best sellers. Their first red wines were made from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Shiraz, Pinotage, Tinta Barocca, Touriga Nacional, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc were planted in the early nineties.
The first in South Africa to produce a Touriga Nacional as a dry red wine, made the first Pink Port, as well as the first perlé Moscato wine in South Africa. De Krans has recently been awarded for its innovation, winning the Most Innovative Wine Award for the De Krans Espresso, as well as for the De Krans MCC at the Michelangelo International Wine Awards.
