The Highgate Ostrich Farm is the oldest ostrich show farm in the world, and is nestled in the outskirts of the little Klein Karoo town of Oudtshoorn. This farm continues to produce some of the finest feathers and other ostrich products (such as meat and leather), and invites visitors from all over the world to learn more as they watch this farm at work.
Young and old alike enjoy learning more about the largest living bird, the ostrich, which is native to South Africa, thriving under sometimes harsh conditions. Tours take around 1.25 hours to complete and are conducted by knowledgeable guides that are passionate about the industry and the visitors that frequent the farm. They are able to answer questions and provide insights into these birds and their role in the global market. A tour includes information about breeding methods, a tour of the incubation facilities and a peek into the hatching room, where around 15 000 ostrich chicks are hatched every year.
The feather room details the rise of the feather industry during the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. The feather boom played a major role in the colonisation of this part of the country, and the establishing of its rather unique character.
Watch jockeys racing at incredible speeds on the backs of these powerful birds, which can reach upwards of 70 kilometres an hour. The race course has stunning backdrops of the Klein Karoo.
After a busy day of touring the facilities, settle down to taste some of the local wines and craft beers, while little ones enjoy the play area or a donkey cart ride, giving the parents time to relax, while keeping an eye on their children nearby. This makes Highgate a fantastic option for families and groups of friends that are visiting this part of South Africa with young children.
