“In the quaint Klein Karoo hamlet of Caltizdorp, world famous for its fine wines, dried fruits and hospitality, there is a winding dirt road that leads one out of town and into the picturesque Groenfontein Valley and a scenic circular route through Kruisrivier and back to Calitzdorp along Route 62.
Axe Hill winery is a specialist port-style wine producer. The small hillside vineyard, planted with Portuguese port varieties, can be seen on the road through the Wesoewer to Groenfontein Valley

As the dirt road takes one ever deeper into Groenfontein, winding its way along the rambling Nel’s River and gently rolling hillsides covered in spekboom, aloes and all manner of Karoo succulents, you find a small sign post with a portly golden flying pig emblazoned on it and you know you’ve found found the Baylys and their secret patch of vines.

Next door to Peter Bayly Winery is the Oude Postkantoor. This charming eatery has a beautiful garden and deck for you to spend a lazy afternoon on. They do not have a license so we suggest taking your own or buy a bottle from the Baylys next door.

A beautifully renovated school building is the home to the exhibition of Roger Young’s sensitive and eloquent photographs and unique, handcrafted furniture of solid wood. He has produced a fine selection of postcards of the environment. There is aa coffee shop serving light refreshments, great coffee and biscotti.

A traditional South African braai restaurant between Oudsthoorn and Calitzdorp on Route 62. A variety of local fare is expertly braaied on a wood fire or a traditional curry mince jaffle, roosterkoek and they host “afval” nights with traditional tripe and pens and pootjie dishes.
